Spread the word – drones are about to become man’s new best friend.

In the developed world, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) – commonly known as drones – have now been so integrated in daily industrial operations that they have become an economic industry on their own. Recent forecasts from consulting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers showed that the drone market worldwide is set to rise to $127billion in the next five years.

You could say drones have opened airspaces for everyone in ways that humans had not imagined before. But almost everybody knows that by now; to the extent that there is a drone to almost every mankind problem on earth. Drones already have the ability to increase crop yields, make dangerous jobs safer and act as a lifeline for remote populations.

But at no time have drone proved their worth to man more than they have done in the year 2020 – a year that began with so much promise for the industry, with the World Bank promising to see the growth of the UAV economy in Rwanda in February.

Sadly, everything was brought grinding to a screeching halt when COVID-19 began to spread across the world. By May, streets in major cities were quiet, and resembled post-apocalyptic settings, as government activated lockdown mode to plug the virus’ spread.

With human conduct becoming a risky affair, the world had to find new solutions to fight the spread of coronavirus and conduct other operations – and it is in this area that drones have excelled. Delivery drones have worked wonders, transporting emergency COVID-19 equipment where it is needed and even working as a means of communication between government authorities and members of the public.

What we will learn at the Drones and Unmanned Aviation Conference – set for its 2020 return on the 24th and 25th of November 2020 at the Emperors Palace Convention Centre in Johannesburg – is the whole lot of commercial opportunities drones have opened up in various industries. We will discuss the latest and emerging drone applications in industries that include health, insurance, agriculture, survey and mapping, policing and public safety, wildlife and environmental conservation, transportation; and many more industrial problems that drones have fixed.

Just like any new technology, drones have brought with them teething challenges, not least of which is how authorities should manage air space in the drone age; at the conference, we will explore ways of dealing with such problems, and the legal channels that can promote a more peaceful existence between drones and larger aircraft in the air. There are also issues with data capture, protection, privacy and security. The Drones and Unmanned Aviation Conference is for technologies enthusiasts interested in exploring the challenges and opportunities presented by drones, and the best ways in which the law and technology can come together for the good cause of revolutionising industrial operations through disruptive innovation.
